Challenge Fund Announced to Help Russell Kids!
Monday, December 19th, 2016
A local donor will match dollar for dollar the first $5,000 contributed to the Russell Backpack Endowment Fund during the holiday season. The Russell Backpack Endowment was established recently to provide ongoing funding for the Backpack program. The Russell County Area Community Foundation holds and invests the funds.
Currently, the program provides weekend nutrition to 54 elementary students. The students are on the free and reduced lunch program of the local school district and children are recommended by their elementary school teachers. Nearly every study indicates that children who are hungry or lack nutritional value improve their academic scores when they are better nourished.
When the match is successful, the Backpack program will be fully endowed. This means that more funding will be available each year. This funding will supplement the current grants, private donations, and the support of local congregations.
Checks can be sent to the Russell County Area Community Foundation, PO Box 172, Russell, KS 67665 and should be marked for the Backpack Endowment. Donations can be left at St. John Lutheran Church or your local church with the request the funds be forwarded to RCACF. Your generosity today can help feel local children both today and tomorrow.
